International Understanding Certificate

 International Understanding Certificate ProgramRequirements:

  • Attend or participate in 10 events, exhibits, museums, performances, lunches with invited speakers, research projects, and/or community engagement activities which relate to China during the Year of China (September 2011 – April 2012);
  • Critically engage with each event through your choice of writing (e.g., review essays, research paper), artistic response (e.g., a poem, photographic essay, short story, play, artistic performance, visual art project, or graphic/architectural design), or another kind of proved project (e.g., recruiting a group of students to attend individual events, organizing book reading activities for children, volunteering at China-related events, becoming conversation partners to ESL students from any country);
  • Submit a portfolio by April 20 which compiles 10 pieces of your scholarly, artistic, and/or community engagement work; and
  • Participate in at least one evening event per semester to socialize with other students and faculty members interested in China.


  • Gain an item for your resume that demonstrates your interest in and knowledge of international themes;
  • Discover common interests with students from diverse background; and
  • Receive personalized attention from faculty members and have lunch with special guests from China.
  • Be eligible for a scholarship for four-weeks Education Abroad trip to Shanghai, China planned for Summer I (May 20 – June 16, 2012).
